I just received my diode and regulator; built the circuit and it works perfectly ;) The current through the diode is constant, and regulatable by changing the conductivity of the MOSFET.

Just read on wikipedia that those IR diodes usually have a wavelength of about 940nm. Perhaps I should just wait until I receive the laser diode ;)
