    Building a laser?

Building my first one myself! Progress is being made, this is step three of five. Last two steps (driver assembly and diode purchase/installment) will be posted as well... Thanks for the help to all the cool peeps at LPF!!! I am a mad scientist now!!! (with the appropriate safety goggles)

    First Lab Laser Build

Good call on the set screw idea Joe, and I may use it, but the panels are so thin, I would have to separate or bend them out of shape to "shove" the wider set screw in between them (CORRECTION... I could put set screws at both ends of the sleeve, outside the heatsink, that is, the sleeve will...

    First Lab Laser Build

No way on that last one Joe, I figure if I do that the glue will bunch up between the panels... Besides I don't wanna glue the diode into the heatsink because if something goes wrong with the diode it will be damn near impossible to get it out of there and repair... I wanna thermal glue a...

    First Lab Laser Build

Well I just bought 2 modules from cajunlasers... Once they get here I will drill the hole in the heat sink, plan out a "sleeve" system for the easy exchange of the modules, then decide on two diodes... 1 650nm ~300mW 1 445nm ~2W Then I will get/construct the appropriate drivers... I think that...

Word up Joe... 473nm at 2W does sound pretty freakin' fantastic... With this heatsink setup I could run it till the cows come home, or until they are frightened away by the bright lights!!! Saw one on ebay in a module for 59.99!!! It's an M140... :lasergun:

    First Lab Laser Build

Not a freaking bad idea Fretwrecker... Lots of pawn shops that may have some decent scrap... Good angle... I wanna basically get the highest heat sinking possible so that I wont be limited as far as heat generation due to power... Also thinking that a "rig" in the hole where the diode module...

    First Lab Laser Build

Okay, one more idea just crossed my mind... I have a 445nm, but the 473nm beam does look pretty spectacular... Will post updated build videos on my YouTube channel...

    First Lab Laser Build

Thanks dude! Gathering the parts for the driver and getting the diode/module/lens are the final steps... I am gonna go 405nm or 650nm... More research needed...

    First Lab Laser Build

This guy was unscrewing it to take out the batteries while I wasn't looking and unscrewed the portion between the driver and the diode and ripped the pins out of the diode!!!! :gun: I was so angry that I almost had a Leonidus moment... He's paying to ship me a new diode from them... Survival...

Ghostcrome- Thanks! Joe Mo- I have a 532nm Optotronics 150mw pen and a ~1W 445nm Survival Laser (which is currently out of commission so I am thinking of going violet or red... If red, a nice, deep red- NO PINK LASERS HERE! Mikesnap- JEALOUS!!!:worthy:

Word up everybody! This forum simply rocks... I really think that anyone who has time and a little cash could build anything! I can't believe I got this thing going! Can't wait to not be a NOOB anymore...

    First Lab Laser Build

So a diode, a module, and a driver are what I need? Drivers regulate the current? I have the LM317 and, I think, to get my 500mA I need 2.5 ohm resistor, but I don't know anything about making my own driver...

    First Lab Laser Build

Hey everybody! I have decided to take my life in my own hands and try to "fiddle" with some old computer parts that I harvested. Good news... I did not die of electrocution... My spelling did, however, suffer greatly... Here is my build! I think that all I need is the diode and module...

    Greetings!

Thanks! Goggles always! I also rig old fans from computers to spin mirrors off of 9V batteries. I am still in the experimentation phase. May start working with Galvos soon. The circle created with the spinning mirror can be seen at night on low-flying clouds above my house! My wife is annoyed...
