According to this 445nm vs 638nm the 638nm beam is brighter and the dot MUCH brighter, then again it could be wrong and i don't have a 638nm.

You could do that, but you can get a 3000mw IR flashlight on ebay for $20 compared with paying over $300 for a 50mw IR laser.
