I have the battery running straight to the leads on the diode control board. Actually, the positive runs through the key safety that came with the case. It can pop balloons at around 15-20cm.

I couldent work mine out so I ended up taking some useful parts from the case and putting it all inside a plastic box. It works fine as is, doesent need the focus to pop balloons. I wish you luck with yours.
