The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

If i remember it correctly, the two middle ones should be minus, and one of the outer ones should be plus. be careful if you test it with no heatsink. then you should only give it about 2V.

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

Off course i am not going to put 3.5V through my LD. What brand and model of batteries did you measure to 1.75V each, and how much did you measure them at under load?   I cannot measure my LD when hot, because i build massive heatsinks on my lasers(just look at the pics), and they dont get much...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

Just did a quick test with my lab power supply. At 2.4V the LD will use 120mah, and at 3.0V it will use 300mah (The power supply can go uo to 3A). I dont really see the big need for a driver here...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

A big part of getting a LD to last long is proper heatsinking, and not feeding it more than 3V. I am not saying that a driver is a bad idea. But if you want to do a simple build, then keep it simple. By the way the LD in this mod is supposed to be soldered to the heatsink(read my first post)

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

This topic is about bringing the square LD's to use. Not about driver vs. no driver. And i have 3 diy reds, that are working fine without drivers - the oldest is a year old

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

I bought the flashlight in a local Danish supermarket... But you can find it on http://www.panasonic-batteries.be/site/europe/English/products/products_torches_detail.asp?iid=8&item=32 About the driver. This is a simple build, using diodes that most people will not even bother to do anything...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

This lens is not as good as even the plastic ones that comes with most lasers, but it works ok. I have also been trying some glass lenses, that i have lying around. They give a very nice beam. but they have to be pretty far away from the LD, before they colliminate well, and at that distance...

One more shot of the lens

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

The batteries i have in right now, are 2700mAh ni-mh rechargeble. But i have used normal duracell batteries with no problems. You should not power your diodes, when they are out of their heatsink, that will blow them really fast. I removed the driver for the led completly. And just connected the...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

After a little testing it seems, that this laser will burn extremely well as long as the distance is not more than 30-40 cm. At longer distances the flashlight lens is not precise enough to make a sharp enough dot. But it is very cool looking, with a nice thick beam. Edit the most effective...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

I will try to get some outside beamshots tonight. b.t.w. here are my 3 diy's By the way, this is the only red, that i have managed to light a cigarette with...

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

You turn the tail to switch it on. On my other two diy's i can focus the beam to a smaller spot, but still this one burns as well as both of them(maybe a little better. The divergence seems to be ok, but not as good as with a normal lens. here is a really bad pic of the beam in daylight and a...

I will try to post some beamshots, when i get the time

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

And the flashlight is: By the way this flashlight is waterproof, and it will still be, after the rebuild

The square plastic LD's CAN be put to use

After reading about a thousand posts, about the square LD's being useless, i will show you a simple diy flashlight laser using these. The flashlight is a Panasonic BF-325. I am using a heatsink for an ordinary round LD, to which i have solderet some of the copper heatsink from the drive, so that...
