In the H.E.A.T. of the light (coherent)

H = Heat / E = Energy / A = Analysis / T = Temperature This thread is being open to post some results of experiments that I have conducted and to present some ideas to the community. I hope to pass on some interesting results, perhaps get some interests from others to carry out some...

FS J.BAUER Electronics LaserBee 2.5 Watt USB only + Data Logging.. In Stock Now

Re: J.BAUER Electronics LaserBee 2.5 Watt USB only + Data Logging $119.99.. In Stock Mine arrived 06-18-2011 and I got a few hours in last night and a full day with it today. Others have done reviews, so I'll keep this short and just say that this is an excellent addition to the hobby. I ran...

    Best Circuit Sim (Free only)

The JAVA Falstad simulator can be downloaded onto a net book and used totally in off-line mode. Most useful and fun. I recently published in another thread the import code for a laserdiode dummyload just for grins... click the switch to select between Red or Blue diode, play with battery voltage...

    DIY Geiger Counter

Here is a good review of various detectors: Ion Chambers Here is one for a PIN diode: http://www.techlib.com/area_50/xraydefender.htm The photodiode is pretending to be a PIN diode; PIN diodes are very flexible... Maybe someone will write bout using an old optical lPm for a Geiger counter...

How did you all stumble upon lasers?

I was 13 and read this article: Build your own LASER! I got $0.50 a week allowance and $0.50 for cutting 1/2 acre of fescue when school was out for the summer... buying a CK722 transistor was a really big step and I saved like forever ... saving for that ruby rod was an impossibility... by the...

Rethinking our approach to the DDL?

Re: "explain me how the electrostatic voltmeters can measure voltages without placing any load on the circuit" Principle of operation (From Wikipedia): "The electrostatic voltmeter is utilizing the attraction force between two charged surfaces to create a deflection of a pointer directly...

Rethinking our approach to the DDL?

My wife tells me that I'm a stupid person for butting into an argument; that I should just keep my mouth (and keyboard) quiet... butt... Voltage exists as a charge (potential) - think electroscope. There is a current (electron flow) when the electroscope is 'charged' but no current when the...

New review: LaserBee 2.5W USB Laser Power Meter w/Thermopile

Re: " CONS: USB cord could be longer; not every PC has a front-mounted USB port" Not everyone wants to jump rope with the USB cable. ;-) Suggest you use a USB extender cable... they run typically $2 - $6 depending on length. I am just not a big fan of cables that are too long... I use a lots of...

    Weird "Dust?" around the DOT

Do not clean it with water, Do not clean it with wine, And certainly never clean a lens, With spirits of turpentine. -Ray

    Weird "Dust?" around the DOT

Fremo: Do NOT polish the lens. Clean gently with non-lint Qtip or optical cloth using alcohol or a specialty fluid. Repeat at least twice. Personally, my 200mw O-like red laser has similar artifacts. Lens in reasonable quality lasers are usually coated, any 'abrasive' will break down the...

    Weird "Dust?" around the DOT

If cleaning the diode does not work, it may not be a dust problem. " In the focus of a diffraction-limited beam (i.e., at the location where the beam radius reaches its minimum), the optical wavefronts are flat. Any scrambling of the wavefronts, e.g. due to optical components with poor quality...

    Laser pointer "oscillation" frequency

Did you properly reverse bias your photodetector array? If not, the photo cells are operating in photovoltic mode and with stray capacitance and a high impedance meter/scope you may be getting false readings.

Safe to look at a 250mw?

It's like wearing a safety belt in the auto.... maybe you will not need it, but maybe the belt will save your life. Goggles save sight. If you get into a habit of wearing goggles, you are always covered... just in case.

    Laser Particle Speed?

As weird as it seems, light power and photon energy are not the same. Since a photon is assumed to be a mass less particle that exhibit wave like features, its energy is completely dependent upon wavelength or frequency which is often called color for frequencies that the human eye can detect...

Incredible! Semi-Accurate Results from Free LPM?!?!

"My solar cell is a generic solar cell." Solar cells have 2 modes of operation: voltage and current. For use as a photon detector, you must use it in a current mode; that is, you need to match the low impedance of the cell to a low resistance to force the cell to be linear. A great read on the...

    Having a Stable Beam Output

y33t: My guess is that your 'cheapie' 30mw green will disappoint you for all time. Cheap-o green lasers are designed using DPSS technology (diode-pumped solid state.) While the IR laser diode may be reasonably stable, the frequency doubling Nd:YVO4 and KTP are going to vary in output because...

    thought of such an experiment?

Wow! An aggressive project, for certain. I suspect that a hybrid approach may work better; first using sound (passive/active) and then switching to light or laser to stay within the forum. The reason I think sound would be better initially is that it is omnidirectional but easy to generalize...

    Olike lasers

The Wikipedia article on photons has a nice chart "Different electromagnetic modes" shows Red, Green, and Blue wavelengths which is a good visual representing a photon's energy as a factor of color (frequency.) One can visualize then that a 200mw IR beam must have more of the IR photons...

    Olike lasers

Ref: O-Like 808 IR laser: Using the LaserBee HLPMII optical PM and working the conversion math, mine comes in at 210mw... I'll have a more accurate report when my USB LaserBee is delivered. The PIN diode for the optical power meter gets hot from the IR, so there is a possibility of error, plus...

Heating power of a 20 watt infrared bar diode?

"Though as I said then.. IMHO.. doing it this way offers zero benefit over using a normal heating element.. and those are a lot cheaper than laser diodes. " Amen! But sometimes cost is not the critical factor, the "WOW factor" would be enhanced with a few IR laser diodes and thermocouple...
