Yes you need a lens. Get a 3 element glass for beam specs or a G2 glass lens for up to 30% power increase with a sacrifice of divergence. I like both depending on the l applications. Also I think acrylic lenses have the best specs for producing a nice tight beam and keeping divergence down but...

Mine takes IMR and ICR cells. Is your tail cap lead recessed a bit? My AW ICR has no button on th e positive end which would explain why yours doesnt take them. If the tail cap isn't the same. What other reason could there be? Does your ICR have a button?

488 is actually quite green. 470 ish to my eye is sky blue 445 has violet in it, but my newest laser spectro d at 455 and that to me is the truest blue no violet but also no green either. It's new so maybe that is why it's my favorite. Lol

Be careful. Heat takes time to move through materials. The outside of the heatsink may not be warm but the diode you can bet is. Especially be cautious if the module has no thermal paste.

If you want a diode laser I'd go with a 405. For 200 bucks you can have a 700mW+ 405nm inside custom host. Also 405nm burns the best per mw. For solid state I can say a 532 from laserbtb would be best bet. Bad reviews lately but they have the nicest hosts I think. The PL ones have a locking...

Easy enough to assess diode damage. Check raw output with out lens and meter it aswell.
