    HELP: Lite-on DL-DVDRW diodes

have seen this used in many Liteon drives. The open can ones are very fragile though, get careless and that exposed wire is history. Got me thinking though, could we electroplate the wires (just the wires) to increase the useable current? This would be a particularly badass hack if it works...

    New 9mm 445 diodes

Might be a Lasorb or some MEMS based antistatic system. My theory, its actually a very very small air plasma tube that "trips" at some set voltage so the static is dissipated in the discharge not the expensive diode. At these scales, the gap might only be a few hundred nanometres so the...

Hi, any chance you can send me a few broken diodes to play with? I am especially interested in LED'd or shorted ones as I can do something with those. Seems that you can "blow out" the short using some creative hacking, and regain some output at least in the LED operating mode. I did manage to...

Collection of Beamshots and Other Laser Related Things.

has someone considered setting up a custom Flickr page or similar? "Add your beamshots here"... Just my $0.02 worth, adjusted for inflation.

Don't try new Samsung 22x dvd burner.

Have the same diode (2* in one can) on this DVD writer made by Asus, DRW-20B1LT It also has the nice optical block with the pop-off cover so it can be easily um, dissected. This particular drive had a broken eject mechanism after less than a year, and only 20 DVDs burned. So if you see one...

DVD data recovery using 445 diode

Update:- Thanks to a helpful computer guy over here I now have a 20x DVD burner with a broken eject mechanism. Took apart (curses, camera battery flat!) and the laser module has a nice easily removed clip lid to get to the guts. Soldered wires to the two diode anodes so that it can be controlled...

    New 9mm 445 diodes

Nice diodes! is it true that the new phone projectors are using the blue VCSEL? if so then this is great news as the wavelength of these is far narrower than conventional diodes. Also 445nm VCSELs would probably only draw 15mA for 4.5mW output.

Broken laser diode as UV sensor

Hi all. Just found something interesting. I found a broken 100mW burner diode (violet 405nm) which measured nearly open. Having confirmed that it still drew a few uA I hooked up DMM on voltage range. Well whaddaya know, narrow band UV sensor 1.5mV outside in the winter sun around 11am from...

    Phlatlight 12w red LED flashlight!

What about using forced air cooling? I wonder if you could make a heatsink out of low melt (95C) BiSnPb alloy... Then blast air down the stack to keep it cool, if it works for a laptop CPU it ought to work fine for this. Or salvage a used heat pipe from an old notebook, Apple Macbooks are nice...

    dentist googles are safe??

Just tested both my "expensive" £29 red goggles intended to block 405, 445 and 532nm. Also tested my £2 B&Q el cheapo yellow goggles. As expected they both perform the same according to my meter, which measures 2.5mA at 105mA without goggles into the diode and nothing else changed. With...

DVD data recovery using 445 diode

Hi all. Looking at Powerful laser diode from DVD-RW burned gave me an idea. I have been looking into recovering data from DVDRs that have failed due to old age, it seems that the dye is the root cause of this as over time it reflows around the damage so that the pits and lands become harder...

Learn From Mistakes That Can Happen To Anybody...

I managed to break a very expensive 200mW BRD. Stupidly decided to decan it, managed to botch it and press the can inwards onto the pins. Which wouldn't have been a problem but I additionally tried to remove the damaged can with a file and went a little overboard resulting in the +V pin...

    Smoke off diode?

I buy acetone over here from a fishing supplier, due to envirowhiners and nutjobs its about the only place left :-( Interestingly you can get MEK, aka curing compound, epoxy and other goodies wholesale, a lot cheaper if you buy the boating stuff and not the model making stuff. Its virtually...

    Smoke off diode?

What causes the degradation? If its as simple as corrosion of the window then surely backfilling the module with inert dry argon gas from a welding cylinder would work? Making the module airtight might be a bit of a pain though, my thought was to UV glue a window in place halfway down the...

    Lens mystery

Hi all. OK this is pretty weird guys. I finally got around to repairing my expensive Bull Electrical "fisheye" 1cm2 IR sensor which has had the filter carefully removed. What happened was that the two bond wires were damaged and went open about a month after I'd done the surgery on the sensor...
