Yea, Robert E Iannini is pretty amazing, my SSTC plan came from one of his books, Build Your Own Laser, Phaser, Ion Ray Gun and Other Working Space Age Projects, he has a few others, most of the plans on his site can be found in his various books.

Lithium Iron Phosphate is extremely safe compared to Lithium Polymer and Lithium Ion. The LiFePO4 cells will take abuse and not catastrophically fail like it's relatives.

I happened into a number of the smaller ones a few years back, the radiation output is very low, barely measurable with a 6993 tube Geiger counter. I'm sure they would register much better with pancake style thin mica window probe.
