Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Most of the stuff has arrived, except for the flexmod :( I guess DrLava is very busy at the moment. I'll have to run it off the old aixiz driver for now. Extracting the diode was very easy on this sled, much easier compared to the LOC sleds (nerve racking). To test I built a DDL driver real...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

I did see you post, it's hard to make an informed choice :) I can bring the laser closer of course. I estimate that I'll need to have a laser dot of maximum 1mm in any direction. I don't want to bring the laser closer than 1" to the surface (optics would get the smoke from the plastic). In...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Thanks everyone for the advise the orders are in. I'm going with the 405nm for now. I'll let you know if it works or not :)

IR Laser for cutting 3mm black plastic?

I'm trying to upgrade my CNC engraver to cut black 3mm ABS. In that thread it was suggested I look into IR lasers. What kind of power level would I need to slowly (several IPM) cut black 3mm plastic (abs)? I do need accuracy, so I'll need to be able to focus the beam into a small dot at 5"...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

The reason I didn't want to do IR was safety. I'd rather see the beam. But if I'll investigate IR before I put in the orders.

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Sounds like I should go with the 405nm then.

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Do you have any idea if I could get the max diameter below 1mm?

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

I'm confused. You said "If you want detail go with the 405nm" in your opinion is it possible to focus the 455 to 1mm diameter dot at 5" distance? I'd love to go with the higher power option...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

I did some more research on the 445nm diode and I found this post by jayrob. He's been kind enough to measure the dot size at 2": 2.3mm X 5.4mm. That is just to big. So it looks like I'll go with a 405nm diode. I'd love to build a dual 405 lasers but considering the cost of a single diode...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

As far as software goes I am using EMC on an old machine with the parallel port driver. Well I don't really care about cutting paper as much as I would like to cut black ABS (plastic). As you can see in the videos the laser is about 5 inches or so from the surface I'm cutting. I guess it comes...

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

    Is this the correct diode for 405nm 12x you mentioned? BDR-S06J 12x Blu-Ray burner lens(500+mW) [M0019] - $51.99 : Modwerx Shop

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Thanks for the kind comments, it has been a very fun project :) I'll look around for a member selling 405 diodes then!

Laser CNC, engraving works, cutting doable?

Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while and built a working engraving laser CNC (using a LPC-815) with the information I extracted from the forum. I've documented the build here: Laser 530 (its built from wood and two old printers). It engraves/burns cardboard and black plastic no problem. I...
