    Windows XP aggravation....

Did you try the program? I can't live without it or something similar these days. I like putting my icons just where I want them, and never want Windows to move them for me. (Now if I could just figure out how to turn off the periodic unused-items-on-the-desktop notification...)

    Windows XP aggravation....

The main time I see it is if I change screen resolutions, which some programs/games do when they run. There are shareware utilities out there to save all your icon positions, then restore them on command. I use one called RestoreDesktop - It add a right-click menu to the desktop to save or...

Hey Daedal - any guess as to when these are likely to come in?

    Happy St. Patty's day

Only according to the Catholic church this year. To the rest of us that see it as an (extra) excuse to raise a Guiness, it's always on March 17th. Sláinte! ;)

    Cheap components

You did list DigiKey LAST on your list, I suspect for good reason. They have a huge catalog but between the prices and the handling charge, I'd never call them Cheap. OTOH, the last time I was looking for an alternative I went with Futurelec, and found that the shipping takes at least as long as...

So what's the count up to by now?

    Things has a NST!!

Okay - take two thick wires (or coathangers), mount them securely in a V, hook the NST to them, and presto - Jacob's Ladder. As the heat makes the arc rise up, it'll stretch out because the air is already ionized. You can get it pretty wide by the top if the ai currents don't disturb it too much.

    Reverse stepdown circut taser

Hmm. A transformer would work both ways, but wouldn't accept a DC input. A solid-state step-down circuit wouldn't work backwards at all. Sounds fishy to me. Besides, I can't see one CR123 resulting in a KV of output - A circuit to do that is certainly doable, there's just no reason it'd be in a...

    DIY Laser Power Meter

The fuse on my board was blown and my sensor had a bad element - I hope yours fares better. You can measure the resistance across the sensor. Mine was around infinite i.e. several MegOhms. Should be around 2.5K Ohms I believe. That doesn't insure it's ok, but it's a good sign.

    is DealExtreme for real?

I've ordered 6 or 7 times from DX. The main catch is the wait. Most times, delivery for me has been about 3 weeks, but I've had as little as 12 days, and as long as a month. They will also partial-ship orders if something is out of stock. Got a 20mW green for $17. Like several of their cheap...

    FusionDrives GB - CLOSED

Where'd you find the battery? Do they have "protected" ones? Because those already have the very cutout circuit you're looking for, built in. In fact it's a bit disturbing when it happens - I was convinced my diode had died till I realized what was going on.

    BR-Laser Finished

Very nice! Seems nice and bright - what current are you running it at?

    DIY Laser Power Meter

I used a 200mV panel meter, but added a switch and a voltage-divider so I could get 0-199.0 mW, or 0-1.999 Watts. Since most of what I'm measuring is <200mW, I like having the fractional digit available. (At least that was the plan - in practice, there's enough thermal fluctuation to make that...

INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!!

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!! The thing is, the graph doesn't show anything above 250mW for the Phazor. I guess we don't know where it would top-out (with cooling). If it would go as high as an open-can (or higher), then $34's a good deal.

INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!!

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!! So here's when I (roughly) add in the numbers from Hemlock Mike's open-can graph (appologies if some values are a digit or two off):

INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!!!

Re: INTEREST GAUGE for PHAZOR Diodes -- 200mW CW!! I'd love to see a plot of a destructive test (or at least one that shows the "knee" on the graph) - I just don't want to be the one to pay for the extra diode.  :) Really otherwise I'm leaning toward buying another open can DVD burner.
