Going to purchase from Jetlasers today and need your help

The effeciency is about 1% if I remember correctly for 593.5nm. For 589 I think it is around 3%

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

USAbro, I know someone who made a coil about 2 years ago with a tank cap consisting of salt water and many soda Bottles and powered by a 4 kv 60hz nst. They estimated 1 million volts but the arc length said 700kv. A little over 2 feet arcs! Not too bad for a crude sgtc eh?

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

Nice find on the 120w! The corona will get you massive losses. Also high frequency passes through glass which is what your Layden jar's dielectric is made of. Either use an NST for 60hz(lol I know you hate hearing this) or get a professional capacitor made for rf.

    Divergence question

Meh it's not too bad. Does require a good bit of messing around with lenses though.

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

I'm guessing with a cfl you are getting give or take 1 ma from that flyack

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

He said he is using a 14w ballast so any loss is a big one

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

You MIGHT be able to get the cfl ballast to work IF you know the frequency. It should state the frequency on the ballast but if not you need an oscilloscope to see it. Good luck and be safe :)

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

Get an nst. Do V/I=Z. Then do 10^6/Z*frequency*6.2832 That will give you the required tank capacitance in uf An oscilloscope would not be needed.

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

Not to sound rude but that doesn't tell me anything. All cfls use high frequency and almost all use mains. A flyback uses a ferrite core because it is made for high frequency. You need to know he voltage, current and frequency for the tank cap equation. People use transitors and zvs because...

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

There should be a rating on your ballast for current. I am still not sure what you are asking but from looking around it seems you want to build a tesla coil. A cfl ballast won't work very well for a coil from what I have heard. If you say it's 14 watts especially. Why don't you just use...

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

Is that a rating for a resistive ballast? If so that wattage rating has nothing to do with power out. It is just saying how much it wattage it can dissipate before you need to upgrade. As for voltage it is impossible to determine but 1.5 cm is more than 8kv with a rounded surface

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

That depends on the input. But generally, if it looks dangerous then it probably is. :D A flyback can put out almost as much as it is supplied with. You just need to change out your components. The irfp250s are good but with more power you need to switch to something like the 260s...

    So I got a microwave for 5$...

He's saying that mots are rated for THOUSANDS of watts. neon sign transformers aren't. Most are less than half that wattage and the big 60ma 15kv ones are pricey and still only get 900w. A mot is not built with safety in mind like nsts. Too much power.

Self-Defense ~ Bear with me for a moment!

Interesting. Although it would be very practical , I feel it might bring more legal attention here if people are starting to use them as weapons. We are trying to keep eyes off lasers as weapons so that we don't ban them. In the US we are pretty lucky. But if we misuse the privilege it could...
