Storage unit find (laser metal engraver)

Hopefully all of the important bits are still there. Being a metal engraver the laser may be q-switched so if you do get to the point of wanting to turn it on, you will need good quality safety glasses. See if you can get some better pictures so we can see what you're dealing with. I can't...

    FLIR just got affordable

The iPhone5's A6 CPU is 32 bit ARM7 compatible at 1.3GHz. The CPU in the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a quad core ARM7 at 1.9GHz. Heck the SGS4 is a transistor node smaller, 28nm vs 32nm. Edit: Nevermind, it's the 5S that has the 64 bit SoC- that's why I was seeing the large discrepancy, it uses a...

    FLIR just got affordable

I'm pretty sure FLIRs have gone away from actively cooled sensors quite a while ago. The E series is powered from a single 18650 battery in a drill-style pack assembly. Current consumption is like 200-400mA IIRC at ~4vdc. Most of that power is probably used by the LCD CPU and FPGA.

The firmware hack is what motivated me to buy one :)

    Selem 2014

Sadly that's at 10A of tube current. She's high mileage, 5500 hours is a lot for a mixedgas tube. It has a digital hour meter so I couldn't read it when I was looking at the auction. I still didn't pay all that much for it considering it was known working.

Mosfet Info Needed for Submarine Project

I would think it would be much more difficult to waterproof a toggle switch, I much prefer your original idea of using a reed switch. That way it can be totally sealed and activate it with a magnet on your wrist or whatever. The resistor divider takes care of the gate pulldown when the reed...

Mosfet Info Needed for Submarine Project

The two resistors form a voltage divider. The total resistance of the resistors is high enough to limit current to a very low value. Reed Sw 10K 10K +Vbat───o/ o──/\/\/\/─────┬─────/\/\/\/─────Gnd │ │ │ Q1 │ │...

    High power UV diodes?

Frequency doubled argon, third/fourth harmonic generation of Nd:YAG as others have said. You're not going to get much of anything high powered in the diode area, even the low powered diodes are prohibitively expensive. Even low wavelength LEDs are expensive.

Mosfet Info Needed for Submarine Project

There's a simple alternative if you want to use cheaper mosfets. Ideally as others have said, you want the lowest RDS(on) value possible, with plenty of current overhead. As for controlling gate voltage, you can use a simple resistor voltage divider to turn on the mosfet with your main battery...

New DIY LED lighting for my room

Glad nothing was damaged from the storm. The other year hurricane Sandy knocked out power for about 5 days. I have a bunch of random sealed lead acid batteries in my room that I keep topped off with a small solar panel. Was enough power for lighting and charging my cell phone. I could also...

    Omnichrome 171 repair

A dead rectifier is easy and cheap to fix, unfortunately it's not a common failure unless it was physically damaged like occurred with my Lexel 95, and even those 50A stud diodes didn't cost all that much to replace. First thing first is to look for crispy components as you said you could smell...

    Omnichrome 171 repair

Just looking at the photos the key switch just acts as a DPDT switch, but after the tumbler broke it may have connected both outputs at the same time or bridged one pole to the other, neither of which are good. Unfortunately these power supplies are switchmode and a fair bit more complex to...

    DIY Stepper based XY Scanner/Projector

I messed around with this a few years ago. Unfortunately even with 200 step/rev motors, you will quickly run out of interesting things to do with the very small grid of possible beam positions. You should probably look into getting some drivers with microstepping. This should give you 256x more...

    Tiny HeNe tubes

If you have polarized sunglasses you can put them in the beam and rotate them, you should see the output beam dim to almost nothing if the laser is polarized.

    Tiny HeNe tubes

The 20mW rating is an end-of-life figure. Most tubes do significantly more than that when they're new. I have a 2214-40MLA that has hit 160mW at full current. Also interesting to note, I have an ILT krypton ion that has a sticker rating of 100mW (which should be a theoretical maximum plus...

    Vacuum Tube (Thermionic Valve) Fun!

Some seem new, the ones in the plain white boxes are probably used but all the tubes were supposedly tested. I was disappointed there weren't any glowy tubes in the lot :p (no mercury or inert gas regulator tubes)
