OPSL lasers are interesting, they use a semiconductor laser medium, usually optically pumped by a laser diode that (usually) gets frequency doubled inside the cavity by a nonlinear crystal

its been about 10 years since this thread has been posted and i would like to say a few things about what happened so far, class 4 blue diodes have been avalible for quite some time now and green diodes are pretty common place now, green diodes replace dpss in most high powered green pointers...

tbh the color looks like a diode on the last picture (pastel green, like 520nm diodes), but on the first two pictures of the laser on, it looks more like 525nm-530nm. but i assume (because of the size of the laser and the color of the spot) that it is a 520/525nm diode laser

its definitely not 5mw, those “jd-850” lasers are like laser 303s 30-100mw of 532nm

if you want a lowered power 405nm laser module...

ive seen reds for sale (650-680nm), and ive heard they will start selling blue and green vcsels

just get a 405nm diode, very easy, they cost like $5 for 50mw and you can get them for free if you find a blu ray optical disc writer

1064nm can penetrate through skin way better than 808nm

actually it is possible to double 808nm and 720nm, ive gotten 404nm from 808nm when i was messing around with very high power pump diodes and some LBO, but you would either need a very high power pump, or a slightly lower powered pump and a few mirrors/other optics

there used to be a place in my country that sold all kinds of laser diodes, including vcsels, but they dont sell them any more

they have very good beam specs (compared to side emitting diodes)

its is not tem00, it is near tem00, remember this is most probably using a multimode diode, multimode diodes would never be tem00, if it was dpss, that would be a different story but it is impossible to fit a 5000mw blue dpss in a pointer.

DPSS lasers can also be multiline (even though its very rare to see one)

sometimes that can happen, only with dpss lasers and 445/450nm lasers arnt usually dpss

It depends, diode pointers are generaly more resistant then DPSS pointers
