I got a 5mW laser for cheap from LedShoppe. It's a great product for the money. I was just wondering what this artifact is on the side of the laser dot. It's hard to see in the photos but its very evident IRL. Is it something that can be fixed or is it something with the diode itself?

Do you guys think that using posi-locks on the diode instead of solder for a first time build would cut the possibility of heating up the diode? Or would it not even work?

I'll probably play middle ground with it and run ~100 mA with a 12 ohm resistor.

Okay, thanks Just to be safe with the PHR, I'll go with a 10 ohm resistor and 1k resistor. I was being dumb when I though 150 mA would last on the PHR. I'll ask here if I have any more problems!

Okay, so I have two questions. On the LM317, how do I know which prong is VIN , VOUT, ADJ? And to figure out how much resistance I need, would I use the formula... R= 1.2/Iout? So if I want 150 Ma I would use a 8 ohm resistor?

Thanks for the help. For a host, i'll probably just use a project box as it has a lot of space. May not be as pretty as a flashlight, but it will make things easier for my first build. Would mounting a resistor after the driver lower the possibility of blowing the diode from oversetting the driver?
