    Homemade CO2 laser

Thanks Spooky, I'm in Bath so not far from you in fact. That sounds very interesting! Are those the sealed chinese tubes? I've heard they haven't got the best lifetime, it still amazes me how cheaply a 10watt plus tube can be made and sold for! Yep flowing gas, picked up a vacuum pump on trade...

    Homemade CO2 laser

Thanks! Oh I know they were, I was considering spending £50 on a tiny ZnSe output coupler and about £100 on a concave HR, then this lot came up on ebay and I just had to have them! The focussing lens should be useful as well. If the plane high reflector makes aligning a pain I'll either grind...

    Homemade CO2 laser

This has been an ongoing project for about 3 or 4 months now, it's part of my A levels and has so far been a huge learning curve, I feel I'm slowly getting there finally, despite the hefty set back of a burnt out transformer flyback transformer yesterday! The laser tube is 40cm between...

    Power ?

Power of a co2 laser is pretty much independent of the bore diameter, as a larger bore will allow more gas to be excited, however will mean there's a longer path for the gas molecules to reach the laser wall and be cooled back to the ground state, so they can be pumped up again and lase. A more...

    Where to get power supply's?

I've just built a 20kv 500 watt power supply for a CO2 laser project of mine, I wound my own flyback for it. You could do that for the 6kv, or use a cockroft walton voltage multiplier on the end of something like a microwave oven transformer or high voltage plate transformer.

Hard drive platters and some co2 laser questions

Look what I just won! Mixed Germanium and Zinc Selenide optics for 10.6 micron CO2 laser | eBay A fantastic start to my set up, can't wait to get my hands on them.

That's a good ballpark figure to go from, thank you very much!

Hard drive platters and some co2 laser questions

Thank you all for the help! That's great Cyparagon, that'll certainly give me an idea as to what to expect! Yeah I'm considering buying one as well, but I do prefer doing it all myself, but I'm still trying to source a concave mirror at a reasonable price, I'm just considering my alternatives...

Hard drive platters and some co2 laser questions

Re: Hard drive platters Yeah that's an idea actually, so an appeal to anyone with a co2 laser; please can you shine it at the aluminium platters of a hardrive and see whether it's a good reflector? Ie does it get very hot? Ok thanks, I'll look out for that.

Hard drive platters and some co2 laser questions

Hello, I'm a student and as part of my A levels I'm planning on making a small 10-20 watt co2 laser based on a Liebig condenser, with an arc lengh of about 400mm and a bore of about 15mm. For the high reflector I'm considering using an aluminium hard drive platter if I can't get hold of a...
