The only time I've seen what you described is when I've fried the Driver board. which I've done a few times. The driver board comes on at full power and then because of being left on too long in the past it drops dramatically in power as soon as the driver board heats up at all. just my .02

7 of one color - just to be clear. one of my projectors has 6 (3 pairs of single modes in pbs cubes) then combined with dichroics before they hit the scanner, I could have added a 405 for 7. ;) Of course its still under a watt - BUT a perfect beam. :)
