Relative Brightness as Explained by Biology

I think it is also very important to note that, even though the pigments in our eyes cannot absorb anything outside of the visible spectrum (~400-700nm), the energy of the light outside of this range is still present. The absorption bands DO NOT represent relative amounts of energy present in...

Relative Brightness as Explained by Biology

Great link! Yea, that is very interesting! 550nm is even closer to green than it is to yellow! The "green" and "red" pigments are actually evolutionary homologs (they evolved from a common predecessor), and they are very similar. The only reason that we can use them to see different colors is...

Relative Brightness as Explained by Biology

Thanks for posting that. Yes, it should be noted that the graph I used represents the relative locations of the absorption peaks of each pigment. It does not show the exact amount of absorption, or all of the intricacies of a complete graph. I also did not create the graphs I used. They were...

Relative Brightness as Explained by Biology

If anyone wants more information about any of this, feel free to ask. I am always open to a discussion about biology/biochemistry!

Relative Brightness as Explained by Biology

It seems to be a well known fact on LPF that green lasers appear to be brighter than any other color. The question however has left many users wondering “Why is that?!” I poked around the forum for a while and it seems that no one has given a good explanation as to “Why?” So I will attempt to...

    Laser Module, laser product supplier

Yea, they are for "sighting in" a rifle. They are made to fit in the chamber and shoot a laser down the barrel so that you can see the spot in your scope. If anyone intends to buy them for this purpose however, you should reconsider. These are rarely precise enough to even get the laser out of...

    Member Map

Oregon looks a little lonely, only 4 members? At least Flaminpyro is one of them, I'm pretty sure he is worth about 50 "normal people" Add me on, make it 5! 97331

    Post a picture of yourself!

:gun: Nice. I have to say that my 2nd favorite weapon of all time is a machine gun (M240G, belt fed 7.62mm). It is second only to an AT-4 rocket... That'll put a smile on my face any day!

    Post a picture of yourself!

OK, I just found the "post a picture" thread, so now I feel obligated to... Post a picture! 1) That's me with my 3 team leaders in Iraq a few years ago. I'm the right-middle... The one with the M16-A2 left over from the gulf war... 2) Flashlight: Check... M9: Check... Too bad this is all I can...

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

Very true. I should have said "not EASILY modified" (by turning a focus ring or something similarly as easy). Best to stick to flashlights or bright LED dazzlers if you chose to use light for self defense. I would much prefer the "Stick" though... ;)

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

I would disagree with this. It obviously depends on the viewpoint held by specific judge, but it would be very difficult to legally distinguish a laser "dazzler" from a handheld laser "pointer". In general, people are very wary (if not downright scared) of lasers (sometimes for good reason)...

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

@HIMNL9 That does bring up a good point. I am speaking of US law, it is important to know the laws where you live. That sounds like a terrible situation in Italy. The fact still remains however, that using a laser to permanently destroy the eyesight of an attacker (assuming you are able to hit...

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

This is a long, ongoing, thread, but I just ran across it and I feel I need to chime in... For those of you who think it would be a good idea to carry a laser for self defense: THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA! don't do it. I am ex military, and studied law enforcement for years. This is only another...

    Beam expander with >1w 445nm?

Thanks for the info. Optics are fun to play with... even more fun when shooting an unnatural amount of single wavelength light through them ;) I'm still going to see what happens with the 445nm and the expander, only because I have it already. I'm not going to go out of my way (cylindrical...

Hercules on Ebay... In case anyone cares

The seller has one negative feedback, and the comment states that UPS lost his package; not necessarily the sellers fault. Says GHE250xxx (serial number?) looks like probably the 250mW, but who knows. I'm not trying to defend him, to be sure... Just saying. Ebay is pretty good about...

Hercules on Ebay... In case anyone cares

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone is looking for one of these big dogs. $650 isn't a bad price for a Hercules... You can also "make an offer" for less is you want, who know how low they will go. Hercules Series High Power Portable Green Laser GHE250xxx | eBay

    Beam expander with >1w 445nm?

I already have the expander. There's no sense building something for <$40 that I already have sitting on the table in front of me. I am not all that concerned with the shape of the beam close up. The reason I am interested in using it is to reduce the divergence over a longer distance. I will...
