Take a look at the LedShoppe lasers. They are much better than what you'll get from Amazon. The only negative is the ship time. They come from China, so two weeks is about the norm. Customer service is reputed to be excellent, though I haven't had need of it yet.

The halo of smaller dots is an illusion. You can't get rid of it. If you point your laser at a far wall, you see the halo around the dot, right? Now, leave the laser where it is, and approach the dot. The halo disappears when you get close to it.
