    I need to focus!

Check out Modwerx. Diodes, sleds, drivers, and test loads, all in the same place. Lots of other goodies, too. Drew is good people; quick shipment and very helpful. I'm not sure how powerful you want that IR diode to be, but you can pick up one in a harvested LPC sled for 99 cents. IIRC, it...

    PHR803 sled extract

I wouldn't recommend a dremel for a high dollar diode. I've heard of people using them successfully on the LPC-815, but for the reasons you stated; vibration, heat, and the possibility of going too deep, I wouldn't risk it. The method I use on LPC-815 diodes (notoriously harder to extract,) is...

    PHR803 sled extract

I've been playing around with those lenses for a while now. First, they're not glass. Sorry :( (I was disappointed, too.) Second, the focal length on those is quite long (Or perhaps short. I'm not sure of the terminology.) the point is, the lens needs to sit an inch or more in front of the...

Lens only focusable up to about 10-15 ft..

It could also be that you're seeing a halo around the dot. This is normal, as a lot of people have trouble focusing on 405nm properly. To check for this, bounce the dot off a mirror on the far side of the room so that it hits right next to you. if the dot on the wall next to you looks like it...

Try this, if you haven't discovered it before

I've noticed that I can leave faint trails on my walls and switch plate covers.

    Kipkay's laser hack driver?

That's not the only way to do it, but it's probably the best way. If you're stuck on using a mini mag, you'll need to get some batteries. AAs probably don't have enough poop for that driver and a red diode. 14500s would work (AA sized lithium rechargeables.)

    Microstamping/Microetching Firing Pin

It can't and won't work. Swap firing pin: mark changes. Grind firing pin: mark changes. Use ammo with a harder or softer primer: Mark changes. Recover casings: Moot point. Use a revolver: Moot point. Go to hardware store and spend $15 on supplies to scratch build a gun: Really moot point. Every...

Help I am new, and lost in this wonderful arena, can someone point me in the right d

Take a look at the LedShoppe lasers. They are much better than what you'll get from Amazon. The only negative is the ship time. They come from China, so two weeks is about the norm. Customer service is reputed to be excellent, though I haven't had need of it yet.

    Help selecting laser pointer

If you're willing to do a build, you could pick up an 8x Blu-Ray burner and stick the diode in a handheld. It would be expensive, but for the potential of over a half watt of 405nm, it could be worth it. Shortest wavelength, highest power, and the simplicity of a diode (no DPSS to mode-hop or...

Woot! Just got my Led Shoppe Greenie!

Like I said, I was only able to burn with the lens from my Inova X1 (it's AR coated.) I looked through my Fenix red filter to view the dot, to determine the correct focus. Focal length was about 2-3 inches.

Woot! Just got my Led Shoppe Greenie!

Small update: The spot seems to get a little spikey if I run the laser for an excessive period of time. After a cooldown, it's back to normal (smooth and round.) Also, I managed to smoke my wallet (black leather,) using the lens from an old Inova X1 flashlight. Out of curiosity, I looked for...

Woot! Just got my Led Shoppe Greenie!

Oh, my. I think I'm in love. I'd forgotten just how damn fun a green laser is. I opted for the 50 mw pointer, and it's plain awesome. Back at Christmas, I had a 50 mw DX-style green that my mom got off Amazon as a present for me (that pointer fagged out, and the seller was kind enough to offer...

    Uranium Glass Marbles

How do you crackle them? Thermal shock?

    Cheap Mirrors / Alternatives

You might be able to use the platters from a junk hard drive. They're supposed to do pretty well, IIRC.

    Uranium Glass Marbles

I don't think so. There's plenty of them on ebay right now, and probably about a bajillion online shops selling them. They're also known as "vaseline glass". They made lots of stuff from it; vases, cake plates, pitchers, etc.

    burning distances

I managed to pop a Sharpied balloon at about 20 feet with a PHR set to 150ma. For matches, tape, and general smoking of random objects, I tried it at distances out to about 2 feet. With better optics, I'm sure to distance could be extended. I saw a youtube video of some people using a green...

    resistors?

You don't need an IR filter. That's just for DPSS systems, like green, blue, and yellow. Violet laser diodes emit no IR light. For your glass lens, make sure that it's anti reflective coated for the proper wavelength. The Aixiz lens is not good for 405 nm. Looks like you've got the rest pretty...

    Blu Ray Recordable Diodes?

That's interesting. It would be really neat if one could make a reader burn with a firmware upgrade, or somesuch.

    "Correcting" Blu Ray Dot

The halo of smaller dots is an illusion. You can't get rid of it. If you point your laser at a far wall, you see the halo around the dot, right? Now, leave the laser where it is, and approach the dot. The halo disappears when you get close to it.

    For U.S. Gun Enthusiasts

Just remember, I don't "need" my guns anymore than you need an evil kitten-blinding laser. I also don't need to justify my ownership of said guns. That's the nature of a right. I often wonder what kind of uproar we'd have if there were a free speech tax, voting tax, reading tax, religion tax. ...
