    Laser lumia illuminated obelisk

@Humphry, my bag of goodies from DTR should have arrived today. I also picked up a lab power supply from Communica. Time to start experimenting with effects for next year :)

    Laser lumia illuminated obelisk

The were projected from the outside red obelisks inwards towards the central obelisk. It was very tricky to make head or tail of it whatever your mental state. From a distance of 20 meters or so it plausibly looked like it was filled with water with bubbles rising up to the surface. It didn't...

    Laser lumia illuminated obelisk

Howzit, Humphry :). Glad you liked it. The lumia wheels were from Glassmen, but pretty much any glazer will be able to cut you out glass circles. Cool, thanks the for the offer of help. I'll let you know when things start moving.

CNI S-GDL-532 and other small green modules

Snake Creek is expensive, quoting > $100 per unit (can't remember the power, but it was low). I've just asked CNI to quote.

    Laser lumia illuminated obelisk

Just regular textured glass with a fairly even stipple. I'd say there's about 0.5mm between peak and trough of the pattern and each of the dimples in the pattern is about 1.5mm wide. I tried several different patterns but this one seemed to work out best.

    Laser lumia illuminated obelisk

Recently I built a 10 meter tall laser illuminated obelisk for a AfrikaBurn, the South African regional Burning Man event. I got a lot of help and supplies from people on this and other forums, so I thought I should post my build experience. Here's the final product: I bought 10 A140 diodes...

Advice on building 4 x 445nm continuous duty line generating lasers

Lumia glass isn't special. It's just textured glass like the kind you'd find in a shower door. Some people use clear acrylic and then heat it with a heat gun until it bubbles. There are loads of videos on YouTube. Search for "laser lumia wheel".

Advice on building 4 x 445nm continuous duty line generating lasers

Yup, that's basically it. I felt almost embarrassed to explain it to people it's so simple :)

Advice on building 4 x 445nm continuous duty line generating lasers

It was pretty basic stuff. I used LM350 drivers with 1 ohm resistors and the appropriate caps and polarity protection diodes for the 445nm lasers. I used LM317 drivers with 4.7 ohm resistors, no caps etc. for the DVD burner diodes. I used two of these in series since I had 12V handy. Everything...

Advice on building 4 x 445nm continuous duty line generating lasers

Everything went remarkably well, considering. We had dust storms, hail storms, wind storms that flattened tents. Amazingly all 16 home made lasers seemed to work out okay. Here's one of my favourite photos of the obelisk: And here are a couple of videos where you can see the lumia effect...

Amazon pointer 3 pack (red green and violet)

God to know, thanks. I was just about to give some "5mw" laser to my nephews to play with.

    Powering LM350 and 445nm off a 13.8v UPS

Thanks, DTR. I tried running it for around 15 minutes. The heatsink on the LM350 became hot enough to start melting the duct tape it was resting on. Maybe I should just put on some really huge heatsinks and be done with it. This guy seems to drop 25W of heat this way: Special heat sink for an...

    Powering LM350 and 445nm off a 13.8v UPS

I want to drive a number of LM350 and 445nm diodes off a UPS. The UPS will be powered by a two stroke generator. The LM350s are heatsinked and driven at around 1.2A. They'll be on continuously for 12 hours or so per day. I hope that the UPS battery will smooth out voltage spikes caused by the...
