So, is it possible to modify a pen-sized crappy laser pointer to anything worthwhile? I have a 2-AAA sized red laser pen that is probably somewhere in the range of 1-5mW. Can this be made any stronger, or is my best bet to either purchase something or custom make one?

Ok, so with someone that doesn't want to burn money, no pun intended (ok, slight pun intended), a blue laser is NOT the way to go. From what I've seen, green is probably the easiest colour to get... it is just because it's easy to make? I would assume green's proliferation of the market is kind...

But, are they more powerful? Would a 30mW blue laser be comparable to a 200mW green laser? Or is it just because it's a unique colour that's hard to make, as you said, and that's the only reason for its price? I'm a laser noob, so I apologize for asking an idiot question... but why the heck are blue lasers so expensive? 700 bucks for a 30mW laser? That's crazy, when you could spend the same amount and get a 200mW commercial laser. Why are they so expensive?
