My HL100 reaches 175mW WITH IR filter, and since it has an amazing focus, I think that you can light steel wool with it.

I have the HL100 myself, and I must say, it's a marvellous laser. Extremely high quality, and if you turn it on at night, it's a lightsaber. It can pop balloons and light matches with ease. I haven't tried it yet, but my physics teacher says thy it can ignite steel wool

DealExtreme sells their 'true green' pointer, and it's definetely worth the 8 dollars. Mine's at least 25mW! Makes a nice green beam in the dark.
