Just out of curiosity, why is the ghetto phone solution so bad? Seems like the only thing in danger is the phone. I will be using the laser to sinter/melt plastic in the context of 3d printing.
One risk I've read about is invisible wavelengths of light damaging your eyes without a direct blast...

The laser is 445nm you are right. This is what we are considering Amazon.com : 2W 445nm M140 Blue Diode in Copper Module W/Leads : Everything Else
$80 across the two of us is a bit expensive. If that's the cheapest it gets, I might have to consider an alternate solution...
