You can actually leave it on as long as you wish, it will become warm but not "hot". The tiny heatsink on the NPN is actually the hottest part. That's at least the case when running it at room temperature, if there is a little bit wind (outside) it does not even become warm.

Those are 445nm laserdiodes, they are perma on.

The shunt is generating an offset voltage to the transistor emitter which changes according to the collector current and so regulates the transistor resistance. That's an active feedback.

I think the absorbation of the o-glasses is good enough for protection but they will just burn through if hit for more than a fraction of a second. I think any normal "red" glasses that do not reflect the beam would have such issues with a direct hit, no ?
