Probably somewhere in the 5-30mW range would be good for my purposes. I just can't seem to find many that aren't a pointer type.

I don't know a whole lot about the power required for visibility without fog, but fog would probably be reasonable. What sort of powers are required to see a beam without fog? Also I'm assuming once you get up to these powers they start to become a vision hazard?
