After a lot of frustration, I finally replaced the diode with the Groove2 board and got everything working again. Now to function test it over a few thousand rounds. it looks great through NV though. I will post a picture once I get some time.
Thanks to everyone for the help!
Haha, thanks for the help. Once I hear back from DrLava I am going to order everything. I will most certainly post up some pictures when done. Next I am going to try and take apart my Laser Devices OTAL and see how hard it will be to replace the red laser with an IR.
Another question, looking at the datasheet for the Laser Diode, it looks like the operating voltage for the laser is 2.1v. I am guessing the Lava Board reduces the voltage to what is required. It also states the current is 25ma. If I get the Lavaboard preset to 25ma, can I just solder and go...
Thanks again for all the help. I am going to order that stuff today. I will let you know how it works out.
Does the Lava driver come with setup instructions? Can I hook up the driver to the power source, hook out the diode, and then turn it on and adjust the power that way, or is there a more...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
It was, but both the diode and driver are trash. The new driver does not need to fit in the cavity, there is plenty of space in the void behind the module. My only question now is whether the diode from digikey and the microflexdrive v5 will work...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
There is enough room outside of the module for the board, just wanted to make sure I was looking at the correct one.
So, just to verify, that diode from digikey paired with the MicroFlexDrive v5 will work?
On the microflexdrive it says if used...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
I preserved the lense and housing. The diode and driver, not so much. Most IR lasers in use for tactical applications are in the .5-5mw range. Longer range are up to 5mw. I will not ever be looking at the laser other than pointing it. For this...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
Can I use this one?
LASER DIODE 850NM 5MW - D8505I
In conjunction with the lava driver? And fill the void thermal epoxy? Thanks for the help!
It's 3.3v at the lasers source. Will this combination work?
Thanks!
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
Do you have links to the correct parts I need? I really appreciate the help. Will the thermal epoxy be required for longevity? So I will need a new IR Diode, driver, and thermal epoxy?
I have another laser that I am planning to do the same thing...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
Ok, the ID of the module is 5.6mm, looks to be 5.6 where the laser resides. I am not sure if my nomenclature is correct, but it looks like the diode and housing are pressed into the module. Best I can tell, the driver and diode combined are about...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
Alright, I removed the lens nut and some of the black epoxy. The epoxy is really hard and completely encases the driver board. There is no way I can remove that section without destroying the board. That being said, I am fine with doing that if I...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
A few questions before I start on this. If I end up destroying the electronics for the diode, can I get a replacement? Do you think the epoxy extends down into the housing?
What do you think the chances are that I will be able to get a replacement...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
Streamlight would never sell me their IR module. It is for use with night vision. The purpose built IR systems are very expense, the rifle systems are upwards of 4k, so I am trying to do it a little cheaper. I will see about taking this further...
Re: Newboe needs help replacing a laser diode
It's a red laser, and in perfect working order, just want an IR in there instead. How do these normally come apart, unscrew the lens retaining nut? Or access it from the back of the module. I think it's around 2.5-3mw and I am sure the IR laser I...
