I dont think any laser is safe for the eye. Mostly because its a focused beam of intense light

A nice ma rating would be about 200-250ma. If your driver cant go to that level change your resistors to a lower ohm value. Such as 5 ohms

Ebay is teeming with loads of 635nm red lasers.

That should be fine. Just research up and make sure you dont find a flat one in that player.
