I find the best method for me is to use drain cleaner. Mine had 55% sodium hydroxide (the dry grain/powder type) and mix with water. All it takes is less than a minute soaking and agitating and it starts stripping like crazy but you gotta be careful.

You should check out to those computer shops/manufacturing factories, they always throw out old computer stuff. I've even asked my local one and they were fine with it as long as i didnt make a mess.

That would be the pot. It is used to adjust the current (amps) of the laser and is adjusted by turning it left or right with a small philips screwdriver. I would leave it as it is as you can risk overpowering the diode and killing it. Heres an example in the first pic...
