Game: Guess the mystery object !

At 5MHz? Definitely not. And it has no input, only an output...

Here is a photograph of the inside. It reminds me very much of a simple crystal oscillator with a single transistor, a few passives and a 5MHz crystal. What it's for I don't know.

If that's a positive column discharge through argon I'm seeing, then I'll take a guess that this is a cold-cathode regulator tube.

Here's another one, but this time I have no clue what it is used for. From the circuity inside I believe it's supposed to generate a 5MHz tone. And before you ask, I don't have an oscilloscope or a working frequency counter.

    Don't be silly...

Yep. I bought one thinking I could use it for EPROM erasing, but only to find out that they don't put out quite enough UV.

Nope. It contains mercury and a little argon. They still make these lamps- by hand, mind you- and they have a very specific purpose.

It is not a short-arc lamp; the technology predates that. It's not an HID lamp either. If I was anymore specific I would probably give away what it is.

Close... It operates directly from 120VAC.

Yes it is. It's actually a GPS antenna. It's from my Magellan Meridian Color GPS receiver.

Game: Guess the mystery object !

Nope. It's made of mylar, and it wouldn't work very well as wadding.

Ok, I guess most people in here aren't old enough to have seen one of these. I found them a few years ago and it took me a while to figure out what they were. IMG_20130223_185328 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! They are typebar pliers, which were used to straighten out typebars on pre-Selectric IBM...

Not even close. I'll give you a hint: they were made for IBM, and they were used to repair a once common office item.
