Some diode windows are coated arent they? 405 diodes that iv had are very noticably coated. It looks like it could be to stop light bouncing back into the diode? i could be completly wrong about the purpose of the coating but its definatly there... its like an oily sheen yellow colour... couldnt...

my advice would be to listen to "le quack" it sounds like he is more knowledgable on the subject than i am. i understand the basics, but when it comes to recomending alternatives i dont feel confident enough... i hope you can get one sorted;)

RE: Thermal glue... The silicone compound i use isnt adhesive, i used it alongside quick set epoxy. The most commonly used (spoken about) thermal adhesive is "Arctic Silver" they have a wide range of products from pastes to epoxy. Arctic Silver thermal adhesive is a two part epoxy type thermaly...

are you talking about that transistor (black upright rectangular compononent)? if so, it should have a parts number on it. I am by no means an expert (at all), but it looks to me that you have killed the transistor which rapidly switches the power to that induction coil to produce the 12volts...

re. bright beam...Yeah i must admit there is a little bit of glycerine fog in the room to bring the beam out a bit.. I tend to use it in most photos now, it,d be rude not too really;) lol :)
