Won't work at all either way. Could the diode or chip been damaged when I removed it? Is it normal for two wires to be hanging off the sides like that? Also, just to mention, I can't even get a light bulb to light up with a D battery.

Let me clarify myself. This laser diode and chip came out of a pen together in one piece. The only problem is that I can't figure how to power it. I don't know what to do.
