Weird POV effect with 589nm.

I just wanted to share a pretty peculiar observation I noticed the other night.
I was using my DL Aurora and quickly swiped the dot across the wall and noticed something odd. My persistence of vision didn't produce a continuous line like what is usually observed when you scan a laser. Instead, I observed a trail of dots, like individual photon frames. I have attached a image to represent what I mean. I wondering if it is something others can verify, or if it is just me.

I pondered about what could be the cause of the phenomena. Something to do with the yellow cones? The DPSS process? The Aurora is actually a high repetition pulsed laser?

I ruled out scotopic shifting by testing in light and dark conditions (eyes adjusted first) I also checked the wavelength band by testing with 532 and 650.

If anyone has any ideas please feel free to comment. I personally believe it could be something to do with pulsed operation, but have no means of verifying this.

I think you may be correct that it is a pulsed output; I'm sure some of the more knowledgable members will chime in and can clear this up. :yh:
 
This is just a shot on the dark, but I've noticed on a couple of my units when the battery starts to get low she starts to blink rapidly. Was wondering maybe??? Edit--- unless they were charged batteries, than crash and burn on my idea.

Thanks BowtieGuy, I think so as well. Bob, I am afraid it isn't that but thanks for your input. The laser is stable in output, it is just when you scan with the laser this effect appears. :)
 
I am wondering if they are pulsing the IR diode for higher peak power to allow more peak yellow power. Edit: You responded to the last two posts when I was posting :p

So....Let me add this, maybe it is pulsed but when the laser isn't moving across a surface you just can't see the pulses?

That is possible, this works for producing higher 532nm yield in some YAG systems. Increasing the intensity through regular pulsing would allow a slightly higher output. As long as the frequency is around 90-120Hz, it will appear continuous.
 
Your Aurora is actually produced by CNI. All the GLP-589 units they produce have pulsed output. This topic has been discussed many times here.
Even my 561nm and 473nm have the same pulsed output. It's more likely that pulsing gives longer duty cycles and reduce the heat.
 
I knew about them being CNI models, but was unaware about them being pulsed in output. Thank you Dr Laser :)

His join date is Feb 2008. So he has been around a long time but have never seen him pop up. Anyway he has cleared that one up for us. :)

If you're talking about Q-switching that's not how it works - and that's not what's happening here.

Having the laser pulsed makes for a very nice effect. As for the Q-switching, no that wasn't what I was getting at. :) I was aiming more for allowing more energy to be absorbed by the crystal in a shorter time frame, allowing slightly more efficiency within the crystal. It made sense in my head, but not in text. :D I wasn't aware that the 589's were pulsed and it is the first time I noticed the dotted trail, so I'd thought I would inquire just in case I'd found something.

I wonder if this is why my CNI 561 which peaked at 4 mw dims to 20% and goes back to full brightness over and over is it pulsed? It keeps doing it until 5-10mins after it gets warm.

most unstable laser I ever seen.
