I was helping a newer member out when I though of a little project. After talking to another member we thought it'd be fun to throw this out on the forum for everyone to see.

I have a few extra Fasttech 5V red modules and wanted to know how reliably they could run constantly. I started this project at 10pm on the 20th. The diode has been on since then with the only off period being when I switched the power from my computer's USB to a wall adapter. That makes the current run time 91 hours! To my knowledge these diodes haven't really been tested like this.

I want to know how long you all think this little diode will last before burning out. Kind of like the game where you try to guess the number of beans in the jar :)

So, here's the set up:

91 hours?!? Wow. I have two of these little guys. Might have to put them to use now.

Had to adjust that guess after seeing 3 years!

I don't have an IR thermometer but I just did the famous touch test and it's pretty close to body temp. It didn't feel warm or cool. The house is kept at about 74.

This is a $0.30 diode :) My expectations aren't quite that high

I think these LD's are more like LED's so I'll say 5000 hrs CW

Well id say there is no way for you to tell exact hours so might as well do a "xx window +/-"

Well I know I plugged it in at 10pm on 20 November 2013, it was previously unused. Now I won't necessarily know when it dies exactly, but I should be able to get it to +/- 8 hours. I have a charger that has a USB port, when I put a li-ion in the charger, if power is lost the battery will run the USB. So if I go on a trip or will be away for a long time I'll be able to take it with me.

Fasttech's site says 5V. So what's your guess Atomicrox? We're at 240 hours!
