From what I understand the coherence length determines how far out of alignment the mirrors can get and still show fringes. Does it also affect the results when the mirrors are close to equal? The small laser is about 6”. I am still trying to figure out why it wouldn’t go black. I assumed...
When I used the larger laser I did place a Plano concave lens after It left. With the small laser It spread well on Its own the video of the hyperbola was done without a lens. I was even able to see several fringes when the mirrors were further misaligned.
I used two different hene lasers and two different beam splitters in the pictures. It took about 1hr to line it up. In the brown pictures I got it to "black out" with a 13.8mw polarized 1144p jds uniphase hene laser and a 1" economy thorlabs 50/50 beam splitter. The window was small for the 1"...
I am starting to dial it in. My alignment is still far from perfect. As you get closer the number of fringes gets lower until you only have one. Pushing on the table seems better for fine tuning then the micrometer. The vibration was still too much to keep it black. It may have actually gone...
Thanks for the advice. That pattern does look good for a diode. I’m going to try to find a hene for around $200. Then I will see if I need a micrometer after that. The guy in the video made It look easy. Hopefully I can make it work.
Yes. Total interference would be difficult. I was simply trying to get something like he did. I would like to thank you again for the help . I got a rough set up but the laser is too bright to look at right now. I may need some rails and I will look into a hene laser for this project.
In my other thread I posted a video from mit courseware on YouTube. Somehow he is able to make it completely black. He even makes it look easy. I was wondering how he did it?
Thank you for the reply. I started a thread discussing my goals and the equipment I have.

I have seen some hene lasers on eBay for $200-300. Will any 1-5 mw hene laser work or will I need some sort of...
Thank you all for your support. I hope to make some videos demonstrating the wave and particle nature of light. An important experiment I hope to achieve is destructive interference with a interferometer. I know this won’t be easy or cheap. Hopefully I can achieve this. Thanks again.
Thanks. I figured I might need a new laser and a translation stage with a micrometer. Both are expensive so I figured I would come on here and get some advice before I spend too much on the wrong part. I will try to get my laser working and see how it performs.
For vibration the table...
I have a coherent vmb2.3-15L 10.5 mw 635 nm laser with no power source. Does anyone know a power supply or battery that would work for this?
The closest thing on their site I could find was a vmb2.3-4L

Hi I am David. I am a construction electrician. I am familiar with 120v and higher. Some of this small stuff is new to me. During the apprenticeship we did have a semester on solid state electronics where I learned a little. I am interested in some projects where I will be conducting some...
