Temperature is your enemy here. The pump diode must be at least 3 or 4 watts. They have a low Vf, so not as much heat as say a 520nm diode, but still a lot for a pointer.

Are you saying you never sought medical attention? That seems unlikely as you described it. A thumb holding on just by the skin is unlikely to reattatch by itself after being just being bandaged. Also, what did you do about the hemorrhaging? The thumb is pretty vascular and would bleed profusuley.
