    Collimating two-knob lasers with 10x expanders.

    Great thanks. I didn't know the first knob could be adjusted completely independent of the 2nd knob (in the way you described). Will try that on one of mine that needs tightening-up of the beam.

    That's a great answer. I was kinda wondering if there is a very-systematic way to do it. It's a two-dimensional search (two knobs), which could seemingly take a long time without some systematic method. (If there were only one knob, it would be cakewalk, of course.)

    Rough estimate of cost of 1kW infrared laser.

    Does anyone know a rough estimate of the end-cost ($) of a 1kilowatt (1kW) infrared (say 1000nm) laser with a beam-diameter of about 6inches at 0.4 miles? (I am guessing the cost will be pretty ridiculous; but, I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.) Also, what would the weight be roughly?

    At this juncture, I think that you and Immo1282 are correct that it is a mirage-type-effect.
